RED FIELDS TO GREEN FIELDS
Red Fields to Green Fields is a research effort to analyze the effects of acquiring financially distressed properties (real estate “in the red”) in major U.S. cities and converting them into green space: public parks and adjacent land “banked” for future sustainable development.
Initial research at Georgia Tech has been followed by a series of city studies which look at specific real estate and environmental concerns as well as existing and proposed park projects. These studies, completed with the help of local universities and organizations, include the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Houston, Miami and Wilmington, DE.
By turning a glut of commercial property into parks, we can improve the economy, environment and health of our cities. We can seize a historic opportunity to create more livable, healthier communities.
